Venezuela Airspace closed
22nd February 2019
Amid an escalating political crisis in Venezuela, on Feb 21, President Maduro ordered the immediate closure of Venezuelan airspace to general and private aviation until further notice. Scheduled airline traffic is not affected by this ban, though Air France has already said it will cancel flights to Caracas this weekend due to security concerns. The authorities have not published a Notam about this ban, but have cited laws that allow them to restrict the airspace for security reasons; this ban is likely aimed at stopping humanitarian aid from entering the country, and preventing government-opposed political leaders from travelling. The Venezuelan government closed the border with Brazil yesterday, and is considering doing the same with Colombia.
